Sweden’s under-21 international Ahmed Qasem (21) has left his lifelong club Elfsborg to join Major League Soccer (MLS) side Nashville SC in a transfer deal valued at €4 million.
This transfer fee marks the second highest received by an Allsvenskan team during the current transfer window, following Bazoumana Toure’s move from Hammarby to German Bundesliga outfit TSG Hoffenheim for €10 million earlier this month.
Qasem is the latest player to exit The Yellows this winter, as the squad that performed admirably in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) this season was unable to secure advancement to the knockout stage.
Elfsborg managed to navigate through three rounds of qualifying, amassing 10 points over eight league phase fixtures, with notable victories against Roma, Qarabag, and OGC Nice.
During those eight matches, 21-year-old Qasem started each one and netted his inaugural goal in European competition with a crucial strike in the 1-0 victory over Qarabag, in addition to the two goals he scored during the qualifying rounds.
Overall, the Elfsborg academy graduate tallied 11 goals and 13 assists across 89 appearances for the club based in Boras.
Qasem’s versatility is likely to be a significant loss for the Swedish side and a vital acquisition for Nashville. Primarily a right-winger, he has already played in no fewer than eight different positions in his burgeoning career, ranging from defensive midfielder to centre forward, and he has also featured on the left side.
Elfsborg Losing Attacking Strength
While the UEL results were a silver lining for Oscar Hiljemark’s squad, who finished seventh in the 2024 Allsvenskan—five places lower than their 2023 performance—they know changes are necessary.
Despite acquiring centre-back Rasmus Wikstrom, along with midfielders Simon Olsson and Julius Magnusson, the team has yet to bolster their attacking options.
In addition to Qasem, they have also transferred Ghanaian international and two-time UEL goalscorer Michael Baidoo to Plymouth Argyle in England.
Scoring goals was one of the few highlights from the previous season, as out of the six teams that finished above them in the league, only champions Malmo FF surpassed their total of 52 goals.
Strengthening their squad before the transfer window closes next month could be crucial for Elfsborg as they look to mount a title challenge in 2025.
