Southampton, who were relegated from the Premier League, have announced the departure of manager Ivan Juric following their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Croatian coach took the reins from Russell Martin in December, but was unable to uplift the team, managing to secure only four points from 14 matches. This disappointing performance resulted in the Saints achieving the record for the earliest relegation in the league’s history.
Currently, Southampton sits on 10 points from 31 games this season, requiring two more points to avoid equalling the lowest points total ever recorded in England’s top division, a dubious record currently held by Derby County.
In their statement, Southampton conveyed: “Regrettably, we haven’t witnessed the desired progression in performances, but we extend our gratitude to Ivan and his staff for their dedication and effort in battling against the odds to retain our Premier League status.”
“With our relegation to the Championship now confirmed, we feel it is crucial to provide clarity to fans, players, and staff as we approach a pivotal summer period.”
Simon Rusk, who previously oversaw a 0-0 draw against Fulham at the end of last season, will take charge on an interim basis until the conclusion of the season, with Adam Lallana supporting him.
Regarding the search for a new manager, the club stated: “The process of appointing a new manager to guide us towards an immediate return to the Premier League is now underway, led by Group Technical Director Johannes Spors.”
The Saints will face Aston Villa on Saturday, which will mark Rusk’s first home match in charge.
