Pep Guardiola has alleviated Manchester City’s concerns that Rodri could be sidelined for the remainder of the Premier League season, although the Spain international is set to miss Wednesday’s encounter with Burnley.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or recipient played a pivotal role in City’s crucial 2-1 victory over title rivals Arsenal on Sunday but was substituted late in the match due to a groin issue.
Rodri, 29, is not expected to play as City aims to secure the top spot in the league for the first time this year at Turf Moor.
However, City has a substantial 12-day gap before their next league match against Everton, with a clash against Southampton in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final first.
“I don’t think he’ll be ready for tomorrow’s match,” Guardiola stated during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
“We’ll assess his fitness for upcoming matches, including the semi-final against Southampton or the game against Everton.”
Rodri’s resurgence following an injury-plagued 18 months has significantly contributed to City’s resurgence in the title race, as he has established a formidable midfield partnership with Bernardo Silva.
“Both players have vast experience and remarkable personalities,” Guardiola remarked.
“They’re not youngsters anymore; they’re seasoned players who have been involved in many such matches and understand how to approach them. They were outstanding.”
Even with a victory that could send Burnley down, City would still find themselves level on points with Arsenal with just five games remaining.
City currently has the momentum, but Guardiola is cautious about the challenging fixtures ahead, which include visits to Everton and Bournemouth, both of whom are competing for European qualification next season.
“Both sides are aware that we cannot afford to drop points,” Guardiola warned, as he strives for his seventh league title in nine seasons.
“Recovering from this will be tough, and our schedule is incredibly demanding. The upcoming opponents are formidable.”
