Asante Kotoko SC’s interim head coach, Prince Yaw Owusu, has resigned from his position effective immediately, as confirmed by the club.
In an official statement released and signed by Communications Director Sarfo Duku, the Porcupine Warriors revealed that Owusu had submitted his resignation in the best interest of the club.
“Interim Head Coach Prince Yaw Owusu has resigned from his position effective immediately. In his resignation letter, he emphasised that his decision was made for the greater good of the club.
“Management extends its heartfelt thanks to the coach for his dedication, service, and unwavering commitment during his tenure, and wishes him all the best in his future pursuits.”
Owusu stepped into the role on a temporary basis earlier this season amid a restructuring of the club’s technical staff, as Kotoko aimed to stabilise their Ghana Premier League campaign.
Initially, his appointment appeared to provide some much-needed stability, with the team showing signs of improvement. However, maintaining that momentum proved challenging.
In recent weeks, Kotoko has struggled significantly, managing just one victory in their last six outings. Consequently, the Porcupine Warriors have fallen to sixth place in the league standings. The team’s performances sparked discontent among fans, leading to increasing pressure on the coaching staff to improve results.
The inconsistent results ultimately put Owusu’s position in jeopardy, with reports indicating that his job was already at risk prior to his resignation.
Following Owusu’s exit, Kotoko announced that youth team coach Hamza Obeng will take over the senior squad on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.
“In the interim, Youth Team Coach Hamza Obeng will assume control of the team for the remaining matches of the season. Further announcements will be made in due course.”
Obeng is now tasked with steering the team through a critical end of season phase while the management deliberates on potential long-term candidates for the head coach position.
With the season reaching its crucial juncture, Kotoko will be eager for the leadership change to ignite a turnaround in fortunes and regain lost momentum.
The club’s management is also anticipated to initiate the search for a permanent head coach as they look ahead to the next season. Kotoko will be travelling to face Dreams in the Ghana Premier League on May 3.
