A travelling Australian footballer has become an unexpected hero for Indian football, as the 32-year-old scored in just four minutes during his debut, carving out a notable piece of history.
Ryan Williams, hailing from Perth and with an Anglo-Indian mother and English father, netted the opening goal in India’s 2-1 victory over Hong Kong during Asian Cup qualifying on Tuesday in Kochi.
This remarkable strike marked the fastest goal by a debutant for India, a nation whose football enthusiasts have yet to witness their team at a World Cup.
The Hindu hailed this moment as “the brightest highlight in a season filled with despair for Indian football“.
Having previously made one appearance for the senior Australian national team and representing the Socceroos at the youth level, Williams described the experience as “a dream“.
“It’s unbelievable – (making my debut) in Kerala, the true heartland of football,” expressed the forward, recently celebrated as India’s new football icon in a video shared by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
“It hasn’t completely sunk in yet. We’ll take a couple of days to savour this moment.“
Williams developed his skills in the youth ranks of Championship outfit Portsmouth and has played across various clubs in English football leagues.
In 2023, he transitioned to the Indian Super League, joining Bengaluru FC and striving to secure a national team call-up while sorting out his Indian citizenship.
He received his passport in November of the previous year, setting the scene for his highly anticipated goal-scoring debut.
“All of my mum’s family— the Indian side— reside in Perth. They’re the ones I grew up with,” he shared during an interview with Sportstar.
“Whenever we visited my nana’s (grandmother) place, it was always filled with Indian cuisine and an abundance of uncles, aunties, and cousins.
“Arriving in India and experiencing all this felt like connecting the dots.”
Yet, despite the excitement surrounding Williams’s debut, India found themselves at the bottom of their qualifying group.
The victory over Hong Kong stood as India’s sole triumph in six group matches.
With a population of 1.4 billion, India currently sits at a lowly 136th in the FIFA rankings, one spot above Latvia, which has a population of 1.9 million.
Leading up to the match, coach Khalid Jamil and several players faced a peculiar predicament, being locked out of their stadium after the state association neglected to pay a security deposit.
