Mbekezeli Mbokazi delivered a standout performance as Chicago Fire secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Atlanta United in Major League Soccer, bringing a sense of relief to Bradley Carnell this weekend.
Mbokazi was formidable in defence for Fire, ensuring a clean sheet by winning all his duels and executing several crucial tackles.
The only goal came from Swiss midfielder Maren Haile-Selassie in the 13th minute, and from then on, Mbokazi was instrumental in helping Fire withstand significant pressure from their opponents.
This victory marks the third consecutive win for Fire in the Eastern Conference, placing them second in the standings behind Nashville. They have allowed only five goals in their seven matches, boasting the second-best defensive record in their conference.
Having started all seven games for his new team this season, Mbokazi’s impressive performances quash any doubts about his ability to adapt outside the PSL. Indeed, they bolster the argument for his inclusion in one of the top five leagues in Europe.
Additionally, Puso Dithejane made a brief appearance off the bench, marking his second substitute outing of the season.
In a different match, former Bafana Bafana star Bradley Carnell managed to break a difficult start to the season, with his Philadelphia Union team clinching a 2-1 victory over Montreal.
Union had faced a tough beginning, losing their first six matches, with coach Carnell candidly describing the team as “fragile,” in stark contrast to their remarkable success from the previous season.
After falling behind yet again in Canada, the side rallied in the second half, with goals from Dane Japhet Sery Larsen and Jesús Bueno securing a much-needed win.
