Rayo Vallecano has secured a vital 1-0 triumph over Elche, extending their lead to seven points above the relegation zone in LaLiga, while also achieving their fourth consecutive home victory against their opponents.
After a morale-boosting win against fellow relegation battlers Mallorca prior to the international break, Elche started the match brightly, nearly grabbing an early goal. However, Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla was on his toes, managing to block a shot from Rafa Mir at his near post.
In retaliation, Rayo tested Elche’s defence, with Álvaro García sending a shot straight into the hands of Matías Dituro. Just before the 15-minute mark, Mir sought the opening goal again, but Batalla was on hand to make another excellent stop.
The visiting team’s top scorer continued to challenge, recording his third shot on target in the 18th minute with an audacious curling effort that Batalla dealt with comfortably, keeping the scoreline at zero. Despite Elche monopolising the attacking opportunities early on, Rayo should have taken the lead in the 34th minute.
With an excellent pass from Alemao splitting the defence, García’s instinctive attempt on goal went awry, soaring well over the crossbar when a touch might have benefitted him. The first half ended on a dramatic note, as Elche’s captain, Pedro Bigas, received a second yellow card for a high boot on Oscar Valentín, reducing his team to ten men.
In response to Bigas’ dismissal, Elche’s manager Eder Sarabia made a tactical change at the interval, substituting Mir for Adrià Pedrosa. It was Pedrosa who almost made an immediate impact, but his close-range attempt failed to trouble Batalla. Following the hour mark, Pep Chavarría forced Dituro into a more serious save as Rayo pressed for the breakthrough. Their persistence finally paid off when Randy Nteka, shortly after being introduced, deftly guided García’s threatening delivery into the six-yard box past Dituro, marking his first goal for the club since January 2025.
This important victory marked one of Rayo’s most significant points of the season, further easing their relegation concerns ahead of their UEFA Conference League quarter-final on Thursday. Meanwhile, Elche’s sixth consecutive away league defeat leaves them precariously just two points above the relegation zone, with both Mallorca and Levante poised to potentially overtake them in upcoming fixtures.
