Nils Nielsen has resigned from his position as head coach of the Japanese women’s national football team, as announced by the Japan Football Association (JFA) on Thursday, just under two weeks after he led the team to victory in the Women’s Asian Cup.
Last month, Japan capped off a stellar Asian Cup journey by defeating the tournament hosts, Australia, with a score of 1-0 in the final, securing their third continental title in the last four competitions.
The squad also qualified for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil after reaching the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.
“Nils Nielsen, head coach of Nadeshiko Japan, has stepped down following the end of his contract,” said the JFA in a succinct statement.
Nielsen made history in 2024 by becoming the first foreign coach for the “Nadeshiko,” taking over from Futoshi Ikeda, who had guided Japan to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the last eight of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The 54-year-old previously held the role of director of football for Manchester City’s women’s team before his appointment in Japan, and he managed the Swiss women’s national team from 2018 until 2022.
Additionally, he was at the helm of the Danish women’s team from 2013 to 2017, leading them to a runners-up finish at the Women’s European Championship in 2017.
