The contest for the prestigious ‘best of the rest’ title in Ligue 1 took an exciting twist as AS Monaco surged past Marseille into second place, securing a convincing 3-0 win at the Stade Louis II, bolstered by Denis Zakaria’s impressive goal and assist performance.
Marseille was the first to make a significant attempt at goal just before the 15-minute mark, with the in-form Luis Henrique unleashing a powerful shot that whisked just wide of the post.
Shortly thereafter, it was the home side’s turn to threaten the scoreboard in the 23rd minute. Takumi Minamino had a sighting at goal, but his ambitious attempt soared into the stands.
However, the luck of the Japanese international changed dramatically soon after the half-hour mark. Gerónimo Rulli’s failure to securely handle Mika Biereth’s shot allowed Zakaria to nudge the ball towards Minamino, who calmly slotted it into an empty net.
Faced with an open goal, Henrique missed the target entirely, directing his shot the wrong way, much to the relief of Philipp Köhn, who made a vital save.
That concluded the clear-cut chances before the break, and in a similar fashion to the first half, Marseille had the first chance after the restart, with Köhn expertly denying two rapid attempts from top scorer Mason Greenwood.
Köhn’s heroics soon proved pivotal, as Monaco sealed the match in the 58th minute. Vanderson’s beautifully weighted pass allowed Breel Embolo to dispatch a powerful shot past Rulli’s outstretched hands in a one-on-one situation.
Yet, Marseille was unwilling to throw in the towel, and Amine Gouiri almost ignited an intriguing final 15 minutes, but Köhn was resolute, celebrating exuberantly after steering the substitute’s shot around the post.
Zakaria then ensured there was no doubt about the outcome, sealing a memorable afternoon for himself and Monaco with an unstoppable penalty in the 80th minute after Rulli rashly tugged Embolo’s shirt as he prepared to shoot.
This marks Monaco’s sixth consecutive league victory at the Stade Louis II, solidifying their spot in the top four, now five points clear of fifth-placed Olympique Lyonnais.
With this outstanding performance, the Monégasques are firmly on course for their first appearance in the new league phase of the UEFA Champions League (UCL). On the other hand, Marseille’s fourth straight away defeat — the first since November 2023 — leaves Roberto De Zerbi’s side nervously looking over their shoulders at teams vying for European qualification.
