Moana Pasifika has announced that the 2026 Super Rugby season will mark the conclusion of its time in the competition.
In a heartfelt statement issued on Wednesday, the Auckland-based club expressed that it had made the “heart-wrenching and challenging decision to cease operations.”
The club’s aspiration was to host regular home matches in both Samoa and Tonga; however, this goal has not materialised due to various circumstances.

“This has been one of the most challenging choices we have ever faced. We take immense pride in our players, staff, and the community that has backed us throughout the years,” stated Moana Pasifika chair Kiki Maoate.
“Through our rugby pathways and community initiatives, we have nurtured a flourishing hub of Pacific talent spanned across various sports, both locally and within the Pacific region. This is an achievement we hold dear and will continue to advocate for as best we can.
“Our focus now is to ensure a seamless transition for all those impacted and to honour our legacy by finishing the season on a strong note.”

The departure of influential captain Ardie Savea to Japan has dealt a significant blow, whilst coach Tana Umaga is set to join Dave Rennie’s All Blacks staff after the 2026 season.
“We extend our gratitude to our steadfast fans who have remained with us through every peak and trough—your unwavering support has meant the world to us, particularly to our players. We kindly ask that you continue to support your team today,” added Maoate.
“Our journey has been one of resilience—not just as a franchise, but as a part of the Pacific community. While this news is heart-wrenching, we look forward to navigating the upcoming challenges together, as our people always have done.”
The club has committed to providing support to all players and staff throughout the remainder of the season.
Next season, Super Rugby is expected to feature 10 teams, comprising five from New Zealand, four from Australia, and the Fijian Drua.
Moana Pasifika will face off against the NSW Waratahs in Sydney on Friday, with Prince Harry in attendance at Allianz Stadium.
