A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of his involvement in a racially aggravated offence during last month’s Tyne-Wear derby, according to Northumbria Police on Wednesday. This follows an incident where Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida was subjected to racial abuse during the Premier League match against Newcastle United.
The fixture held on March 22, which Sunderland triumphed in with a score of 2-1, was briefly halted for three minutes in the second half after reports emerged of discriminatory abuse from the stands.
Both clubs strongly condemned the incident, with Sunderland affirming their support for Geertruida.
The individual from Gateshead was taken into custody on Tuesday and subsequently released on police bail as investigations are still ongoing, as stated by Northumbria Police.
“Racial abuse has no place in football or in our communities, and we will not condone such behaviour,” stated Detective Inspector Phil Guard.
