With an impressive 4-0 victory over Caen at Le Moustoir, FC Lorient has secured their return to Ligue 1 just a year after relegation. This outcome coincided with Metz’s 2-1 loss to Pau.
In a twist of fate, Le Havre’s 1-1 stalemate with Monaco has ensured Montpellier’s descent to Ligue 2, while the identity of one of next season’s promoted teams for Ligue 1 is now confirmed.
That team is Lorient. Leading the standings at the outset of Matchday 32, the Merlus were in a position to clinch their promotion with a win over Caen, combined with a Metz defeat in Pau.
In the encounter at Le Moustoir, Lorient took full advantage against a Caen side already relegated to the National, registering a comfortable 4-0 victory. At the same time, FC Metz found themselves needing at least a draw to stave off the threat from the Breton team.
The Grenats suffered a setback with their 2-1 loss, leaving them on 61 points, now trailing Lorient by seven points, ensuring the third-placed team can’t catch up. Furthermore, the defeat in Bearn has left Paris FC four points ahead of Lorient with only two matches left to play.
As the situation stands, Metz will now enter the promotion playoffs, possibly facing the 16th-placed team from Ligue 1 in their quest to ascend back to the top tier.
