As the thrilling La Liga season unfolds, leaders Barcelona hold a narrow three-point advantage over Real Madrid, while their top scorers are also separated by just three goals.
Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski is the league’s leading goal scorer with 25, while Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe is close behind with 22, adding another layer to this enticing rivalry.
This Saturday, Barcelona will face a determined Real Betis, currently sixth, while last season’s champions, Real Madrid, are set to host struggling Valencia at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In their recent matches, Mbappe netted two goals in Real Madrid’s hard-fought 3-2 victory over Leganes, only for Lewandowski to respond with a brace of his own in Barcelona’s commanding 4-1 win against Girona.
In the closing moments of their match, Barcelona had chances to extend their lead, a point that Lewandowski himself acknowledged.
“In the final minutes, there was more space, and we had more opportunities to score,” the 36-year-old Poland international stated.
“If we had executed better with our final passes, we could have added one or two more goals.”
Lewandowski has been in outstanding form, scoring nine goals in his last nine league matches and amassing 38 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions.
Despite his advancing age, he remains confident in his ability to continue making an impact at an elite club for years ahead.
“I understand that people are concerned about my age, but I’ve been working hard since I was 21 or 22, and I aim to compete at the highest level for many more years,” he remarked.
“Physically, I feel great, and the stats show that I’m performing similarly to how I did a few years ago.”
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick emphasised that the striker’s focus extends beyond personal accolades, including Spain’s prestigious “Pichichi” award.
“He’s in top shape, and I know he’s eager to win the Pichichi,” Flick commented.
“However, as I’ve said before, the team’s success is what matters most… I can see that he truly cares about the team and concentrates on helping us.”

Following closely behind is Mbappe, who has racked up 33 goals in 46 appearances this season, matching the number of goals legendary Cristiano Ronaldo scored in his debut season with Real Madrid.
The French forward, who admired the Portuguese superstar, described equalling this tally as “very special.”
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti praised Mbappe this week, suggesting he has the potential to become a “legend” akin to Ronaldo, who is the club’s all-time top scorer with 450 goals.
Mbappe has stated that he is not placing any ceiling on his goal tally this season, while Vinicius Junior previously mentioned that they would do “everything we can to ensure (Mbappe) becomes the top scorer across all competitions.”
Valencia’s impending visit represents a good opportunity for Mbappe to increase his goal count, especially as Los Che’s trio of Jose Gaya, Luis Rioja, and Dimitri Foulquier are all suspended after accumulating yellow cards last weekend.
This season, Mbappe leads all players with 12 league goals in 2025, leaving Lewandowski with seven.
Villarreal’s Ayoze Perez has also been notable this season, scoring 12 goals from 22 league appearances, despite dealing with some injury setbacks. The Yellow Submarine, currently in fifth, will need their forward to be at his peak when they face fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
Perez contributed a goal and an assist in Villarreal’s recent win over Getafe.
