Bayer Leverkusen applied more pressure on Bayern Munich in the race for the Bundesliga title, securing a comfortable 2-0 win over bottom-placed Holstein Kiel.
As expected, Leverkusen took the initiative early on against Kiel, creating several opportunities in the opening five minutes. Patrik Schick had the most promising chance but saw his header from Alejandro Grimaldo’s corner cleared off the line by Shūto Machino.
However, Kiel’s relief was short-lived as Schick quickly found his stride, seizing on Amine Adli’s cross to score from close range.
Kiel did provide a reminder that they would not make it easy, as Magnus Knudsen broke free from the back but was denied by Matej Kovar, who smothered his shot.
Set-pieces continued to be a weak spot for the home side, and they were fortunate not to concede again midway through the first half when Adli, unmarked, could only direct his header straight at Timon Weiner.
Adli eventually found the net after being set up by Florian Wirtz, deftly lifting the ball over the advancing Weiner, ensuring Leverkusen went into the break with a deserved two-goal cushion.

Kiel made a determined start to the second half, launching a series of attacks, though they failed to threaten the Leverkusen goal. The first real chance of the half fell to the visitors, with Weiner forced into a magnificent save to deny Edmond Tapsoba, and he was soon called upon again to stop Wirtz from close range.
Wirtz was visibly eager to add to the scoreline but repeatedly found himself thwarted in his attempts, coming close with another shot that went inches wide with just 15 minutes remaining, his frustration clearly mounting.
The midfielder must have been wondering what he needed to do to find the back of the net, and he had one final showdown with Weiner before the end of the match, producing a tired effort that was comfortably saved as he was assisted by Emiliano Buendia.
That missed opportunity ultimately made little difference, as Xabi Alonso’s side were untroubled in managing their first away league win since early January.
