Arsenal’s impressive 15-match unbeaten streak at home in the Premier League came to an end as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to West Ham United. This result marks a consecutive league win for the Hammers at the Emirates Stadium, delivering a significant and potentially pivotal blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations.
Despite Liverpool dropping points earlier in the week, Arsenal appeared somewhat flat in a lacklustre first half.
The Gunners’ clearest opportunity fell to Riccardo Calafiori, who recorded their sole shot on target during the opening 45 minutes but unfortunately aimed it straight at the waiting Alphonse Areola from the edge of the area.
On the other side, West Ham’s Tomas Soucek saw a couple of headers go wide, while Jarrod Bowen narrowly missed connecting with a cut-back from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, sending his shot just past the post.
A moment of brilliance just before half-time saw the same two players combine for the Hammers’ opening goal. Wan-Bissaka delivered a superb cross that Bowen met with a diving header from close range, sending shockwaves through the Emirates crowd.
The English forward nearly doubled his tally soon after the break, almost connecting with a threatening ball flashed across the goal. Mikel Arteta opted for early substitutions, which injected some life into the team; Leandro Trossard had a shot that was expertly thwarted by Areola’s outstretched leg.
However, Arsenal’s chances of staging a comeback took a severe hit in the 70th minute when substitute Myles Lewis-Skelly, whose previous red card against Wolves had been rescinded a few weeks ago, was shown a second yellow. The young player, caught in a difficult position, brought down Mohammed Kudus at the half-way line, and after a VAR intervention, his first yellow became a red.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Arsenal kept pressing forward but ultimately lacked the quality to turn the game around.
Graham Potter’s side deservedly secured only their second victory in eight away matches, and though Arsenal trails Liverpool by eight points, that gap could stretch to an almost insurmountable 11 if Liverpool triumph at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow.
