Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, acknowledged the undeniable shortcomings of his team during the first half of their 2-2 stalemate against Everton on Saturday, even though the visitors managed to recover from a two-goal deficit to claim a point.
United appeared set for their ninth defeat in 13 league outings when first-half strikes from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure gave the home side the upper hand at Goodison Park.
During the opening half, the visitors failed to register a single shot on target, marking the 11th consecutive league match in which they have not found the net in the first half through open play.
Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte netted fine goals to salvage a point for United.
“We only performed in one half and managed to draw the match; we were absent in the first half,” Amorim commented. “Everything we worked on during the week was initiated; I believe the free man was available, the space was there, yet we lost balls we simply cannot afford to lose.
“As for the second half, I instructed the players to replicate our earlier practice, but with added energy.”
“I recognise that each game tells its own story, so my focus is solely on assisting my players in that moment. I’ll only be worrying when I witness performances like that in the first half again.”
To secure their point, United required a late VAR intervention, which overturned the referee’s decision to award Everton a late penalty for a foul on Ashley Young.
Everton manager David Moyes expressed his disappointment over the ruling, reflecting on the contentious decision involving his former club.
“I believe that everyone watching football hopes for a referee to stand firm with their decision,” Moyes noted. “Instead, they’re being told they are completely wrong. If it is absolutely clear and obvious, that should be the purpose of VAR. I’m too long in the tooth to get embroiled in battles over decisions.
“At the time, I felt the referee made the right call, and he should have stuck with it.”
