Leicester City have faced relegation from the Championship to League One after a 2-2 draw against play-off contenders Hull City.
The Foxes required a victory in Tuesday’s match at the King Power Stadium to keep their survival hopes alive but fell short, briefly taking the lead at 2-1 before being levelled out.
This marks the club’s second relegation in back-to-back seasons and their third drop in four years.
The situation now stands as an unwelcome reminder for Leicester, who were the surprise champions of the Premier League in 2016.
The season began promisingly, with just one defeat in their first ten matches under former QPR manager Marti Cifuentes. However, fortunes turned unfavourably as the year progressed.
Concerns grew when they were hit with a six-point deduction in February for breaching EFL spending regulations, leaving them precariously placed just above the relegation zone.
After swiftly parting ways with Cifuentes, Gary Rowett stepped in, yet results remained disappointing, achieving only one league victory since his appointment.
A recent loss to relegation rivals Portsmouth pushed them to the edge, leading to fans expressing their frustration during a confrontation with midfielder Harry Winks outside Fratton Park.
Fall from grace
This relegation encapsulates a tumultuous decade following their remarkable Premier League victory, which astonished both the league and football worldwide.
The 5000/1 odds-defying achievement secured them a spot in the Champions League, where they advanced to the quarter-finals and finished 12th in the ensuing season.
In 2021, they celebrated winning the FA Cup for the first time.
However, merely two seasons later, they find themselves relegated despite boasting a talented squad that includes stars like Jamie Vardy, James Maddison, and Youri Tielemans.
They made a swift return to the Premier League by clinching the Championship title under Enzo Maresca but would soon face a challenging season ahead.
Maresca’s departure to Chelsea before last season commenced, coupled with the unsuccessful stints of Steve Cooper and Ruud van Nistelrooy, could not avert an immediate relegation.
