After a 2-1 triumph over Bolivia in the inter-confederation play-off finals held in Mexico, Iraq is set to make its return to the FIFA World Cup after a four-decade absence.
There may have been expectations of a tense start to the match due to the stakes involved, but Iraq launched into the game with determination, seeking an early advantage.
The Lions of Mesopotamia nearly took the lead within nine minutes, thanks to a brilliantly executed free-kick by Amir Al-Ammari. However, Guillermo Viscarra delivered a stellar save, tipping the ball onto the crossbar.
Yet, Viscarra was unable to prevent the inevitable just a minute later. A well-placed corner from Al-Ammari met Ali Al-Hamadi in the box, and his powerful header found the net, igniting wild celebrations from the Iraqi fans.
La Verde responded well to this blow, gradually settling into the game and finding an equaliser less than ten minutes before halftime.
A speculative shot from Ramiro Vaca deflected fortuitously to Moises Paniagua, who controlled the ball deftly before firing a close-range effort beyond Ahmed Basil, bringing Bolivia level.
As the second half commenced, with the match finely balanced, Iraq’s captain Aymen Hussein took it upon himself to regain the lead for his side.
Substitute Marko Farji made an immediate impact, delivering a precise pass that set up Hussein perfectly to score from inside the area, marking his 33rd international goal.
Following the hydration break in the second half, tension enveloped the encounter, with both teams eager for the historic win. While this led to a somewhat disjointed affair, it remained an absorbing spectacle.
As full-time approached, Graham Arnold’s side had a golden opportunity to secure the win, but Mohanad Ali shot high over the bar when a calmer finish was warranted.
Despite this missed chance, Iraq managed to hold on for one of the most significant victories in its football history. This marks only the second time they have qualified for the World Cup, while Bolivia’s wait for a return since 1994 continues.
For their efforts, Iraq will compete in Group I this summer alongside France, Norway, and Senegal – a daunting challenge in pursuit of the knockout stages, but they have undoubtedly earned their spot at the tournament.
