On Golden Slipper day at Rosehill, James McDonald further solidified his legacy in Australian racing history.
Needing just two victories to surpass Damien Oliver’s legendary total of 129 Group 1 wins, ‘J-Mac’ not only matched his idol but overtook him in spectacular fashion.
He achieved the milestone in his third outing of the day, guiding Aeliana to a win in the 2000m Ranvet Stakes, equalling Oliver’s record.
Moments later, he steered Chris Waller’s Autumn Boy to victory in the Rosehill Guineas, making him statistically the greatest Group 1 jockey in Australia’s history.

“It’s a wonderful achievement, but it truly reflects on the outstanding horses I have the privilege to ride,” McDonald remarked.
“Without a doubt, I ride some of the best horses and top contenders each race, and I consider myself fortunate for that chance.
“Reaching a milestone like this is incredibly special, particularly considering my admiration for Damien Oliver.
“Growing up, I watched him ride winners of the Melbourne Cup.
One race that stands out is Media Puzzle, when he overcame significant challenges to triumph. He is an extraordinary rider.”

“I’m fortunate to have a wonderful family and a strong support team, including Mark Guest and close family friends. John O’Shea has been like a father to me.
“He backed me when I was struggling and provided me with countless opportunities, even when my performance was under par, along with many trainers across Australia and New Zealand.”
This achievement also saw McDonald and Waller surpass the Hall of Fame trainer Tommy Smith and jockey George Moore’s record of 51 Group 1 wins, marking McDonald’s 100th major victory in Australia.
He further extended his lead with a 131st victory aboard Autumn Glow in the 2000m George Ryder Stakes.
