Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton is optimistic that new head coach Roberto De Zerbi will steer the club to safety in the Premier League.
De Zerbi was appointed during the international break following the departure of interim manager Igor Tudor, who had a brief tenure after taking over from Thomas Frank.
With only seven matches remaining this season and Spurs just one point clear of the relegation zone, De Zerbi has a significant challenge ahead.
There has been discussion about whether De Zerbi’s playing philosophy will suit a team that is battling relegation, but Hutton believes the Italian will adapt his tactics as needed.
Speaking to Tribal Football on behalf of Betway, Hutton remarked: “It would be a gamble to try and implement everything all at once.”
“This coach is intelligent, he knows his football, as well as what he expects and demands from his players. So the key is, can he simplify his ideas? Can he convey crucial insights to help the players deliver what he desires?”
“They need to improve significantly both in and out of possession.”
“Without a doubt, there’s a lot of talent in the squad, and injuries have played a huge role, too. But if he can get those important elements right, I believe they will avoid relegation.”
“It’s all about short-term success; winning matches one at a time. The game against Sunderland will be very tough, but if everyone buys into his plans, they’ll have a solid chance. He appears very hands-on, enthusiastic, and energetic during the training sessions.”
“This is what players thrive on, and from what I’ve observed, the outlook seems encouraging, although I doubt we’ll witness the full style of play he aims for just yet.”
“However, he has signed a five-year deal, which gives him time to implement his vision, though I don’t expect a complete transformation in just a few weeks.”

Advantages of Marseille Experience
When asked if De Zerbi’s tenure at Olympique de Marseille would be advantageous in managing a club like Tottenham, Hutton expressed a positive outlook.
He stated, “Absolutely, being at a club of that calibre will definitely be beneficial. The expectations that accompany such a club, along with the pressure to perform, mean that fans will not hesitate to voice their opinions if results are lacking.”
“I researched it, and he boasts one of the highest win rates among Marseille managers. While he may not have achieved exactly what he hoped in the Champions League, that experience is invaluable.”
“Furthermore, having managed Brighton, he understands the Premier League demands and knows what Tottenham expects as a club. This all assists him in transitioning to the Spurs manager role. Naturally, he will face expectations to steer the team out of this predicament, but what matters is how he performs afterwards.”
“They regard themselves as a club aiming for the top four or five, so he needs to guide them back to that status while playing in a way that resonates with the fans.”
