Liverpool’s French striker Hugo Ekitike will be sidelined for the remainder of the season and will also miss the World Cup due to a ruptured Achilles tendon, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.
The 23-year-old was forced to leave the pitch during the first half of Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday, after slipping on the playing surface. Liverpool ultimately lost the match 2-0, resulting in a 4-0 aggregate exit from the competition.
Medical scans have confirmed the serious nature of the injury, and Liverpool has revealed that Ekitike will be out for the final weeks of this campaign.
Additionally, this injury means he will not be available for the World Cup, as France manager Didier Deschamps stated on Wednesday that the striker is ruled out of the tournament in North America.
“We will provide further updates at the appropriate time, with Hugo receiving the full support of everyone at LFC,” Liverpool conveyed in an official statement.
Ekitike made the move to Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt in July and has emerged as the club’s leading scorer this season, netting 17 goals across all competitions, including 11 in the Premier League. He has also scored two goals for France in eight appearances.
