In a bid to etch his name into Nedbank Cup lore, TS Galaxy’s interim coach Bernard Parker will lead the team into battle against Durban City in the tournament final at Peter Mokaba Stadium next Saturday.
Parker stepped into the caretaker role after the club parted ways with Adnan Beganovic on Thursday, who led Galaxy to the final despite their recent split.
Unless a permanent coach is swiftly appointed, Parker will guide Galaxy in the final, aiming to become the first individual to win the Nedbank Cup as a player and head coach since its reform in 2008.
The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana striker is well-acquainted with the thrill of victory and has already carved his name into Nedbank Cup history.
He netted the decisive goal for Chiefs in the 2013 final, clinching victory over SuperSport United in extra time with a remarkable 25-yard strike.
As he advanced towards the box, Parker unleashed a low shot into the bottom right corner, leaving goalie Ronwen Williams helpless.
Parker continued his career with TS Galaxy, retiring at the end of the 2023/24 season after an illustrious 16 years in professional football.
Throughout his career, he participated in 28 Nedbank Cup matches—21 of which were starting appearances—scoring three goals. His other goals were scored for Chiefs against Lamontville Golden Arrows in 2018 and Chippa United in 2019.
In a twist of fate, he played for Chiefs in the 2019 Nedbank Cup final against Galaxy, where the then second-tier side shocked the AmaKhosi with a 1-0 win. Hence, Parker has experienced both triumph and defeat at this level.
Parker expressed his optimism last month that Galaxy has what it takes to go all the way in this season’s Nedbank Cup, confident that his wealth of experience will be invaluable.
“TS Galaxy triumphed in the 2019 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium. That’s the magic of the Nedbank Cup; surprises are always part of the game,” Parker remarked. “It’s about how we navigate the moment and how we manage the game as it unfolds.”
“Regrettably, I was on the losing side then, but this time I’m determined to emerge victorious as a coach and earn that Nedbank Cup medal, which I firmly believe is within our grasp.”
“As far as I can recall, only Macbeth Mahlangu, our centre-back, was part of that squad in 2019. The rest of the team comprises relatively new players who have yet to experience success with TS Galaxy. It’s crucial for us as a club to make history repeat itself.”
“Drawing from my background as a former player, I aim to impart that knowledge to the squad. It’s critical that our senior players take the lead, control pivotal moments, and capitalise on opportunities to secure victory.”
