Former AC Milan and Japan international Keisuke Honda expressed his aim to set new milestones after joining a Singaporean club on Friday, marking the continuation of his vibrant football career at the age of 39.
FC Jurong, competing in the Singapore Premier League, announced that the renowned attacking midfielder, who has represented Japan in three World Cups, will play for them in the upcoming season.
Honda’s most recent stint was with Bhutan’s Paro FC, where he made two appearances and netted two goals in the 2024/25 season.
Before that, he had a spell with Lithuania’s FK Suduva in 2021 and has played for clubs across Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, and Azerbaijan.
In a statement, Honda revealed he is “pursuing various personal challenges”, including a goal to score in more top domestic leagues than anyone else.
“My main objective with this club, however, is to clinch the league title,” he affirmed.
“We face a few formidable opponents, so it’ll be a tough journey, but I’m resolute in my determination to achieve this.”
Having retired from international football with 98 caps and 38 goals, Honda’s last appearance for the Japan national team was at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Apart from his footballing ventures, he also oversees a venture capital fund, owns a non-league team in Japan, and has previously managed Cambodia’s national team from August 2018 to January 2023.
FC Jurong, which was previously known as Albirex Niigata Singapore, stated that signing Honda signifies more than just acquiring a single player.
“To create a formidable legacy, a solid foundation is essential,” remarked chairman Daisuke Korenaga.
“We are infusing world-class expertise, vision, and passion into this foundation.
“Together with Keisuke Honda, we aspire to establish a legacy that will lead this club into the next century.”
