Rugby league icon Sam Thaiday has shared a conversation he had with a “deflated” Gehamat Shibasaki leading up to the centre’s surprising return to the field last week.
After an astounding journey from reserve grade to representing Queensland and the Kangaroos last season, Shibasaki faced being cut by coach Michael Maguire following the first two games of the 2026 season.
The 28-year-old found himself playing in the Queensland Cup during round three while his NRL teammates secured a remarkable away victory against the Melbourne Storm. His replacement, Grant Anderson, delivered an impressive performance on the wing, while Deine Mariner excelled in the centre position.
Thaiday noted that it was evident that Shibasaki’s place on the team was at risk, as he had fallen out of favour and was struggling with his confidence.

“I managed to have a chat with Gehamat following the Melbourne match and he seemed really downcast,” premiership winner Thaiday stated on Wide World Of Sports’ QLDER.
“He felt relief due to the Broncos’ victory, yet he was visibly low, knowing he had a huge battle ahead to reclaim his spot on the team.
“I advised him to return, focus on the finer details, and rebuild his confidence.”

As often happens in rugby league, opportunities arise unexpectedly, and unfortunately for another player, an injury opened the pathway for Shibasaki.
He found himself on the bench against the Dolphins on Friday night and was unexpectedly called into action when Grant Anderson suffered a knee injury, ultimately scoring a vital late try in Brisbane’s 26-12 success at Suncorp Stadium.

“Gehamat entered the match with the No.17 jersey, possibly thinking he wouldn’t get a chance to play,” Thaiday mentioned.
“However, he stepped up, performed his role effectively, and this experience will undoubtedly bolster his confidence moving forward.
“This is now his jersey to hold on to, but it’s also his to potentially lose.
“He had a remarkable year last season, making the leap from Queensland Cup to international competition in a brief period, which was an incredible achievement. Now, his primary challenge is maintaining that level of consistency.”
Shibasaki may not stand alone in regaining his place within the Broncos, as Jesse Arthars is also in contention for a spot against the Gold Coast Titans.

Although Arthars has yet to feature in a first-grade match this season, he may get the chance to face the Gold Coast Titans if Josiah Karapani is sanctioned for an off-field incident.
“Jesse has been patiently biding his time and it would be fantastic to see him back on the team as well,” Thaiday remarked.
“It’s a valuable lesson for young players everywhere – be patient, continue honing your skills, and when opportunities arise, seize them.”
Brisbane is set to take on the Titans this Saturday night at Cbus Super Stadium.
