In a rather lacklustre encounter at the Westfalenstadion, Borussia Dortmund and Sporting CP played to a goalless stalemate, allowing the home side to progress to the last 16, where they will meet either Aston Villa or LOSC Lille.
Sporting’s chances of advancing were slim, particularly in light of the absence of their injury-hit star striker Viktor Gyokeres, a significant blow for the visitors.
Conversely, Niko Kovac’s side had struggled since his arrival, losing both Bundesliga matches to date, and could certainly use a confidence-boosting win despite having secured a strong position in Lisbon last week.
The slow tempo of the match reflected the nature of the tie, with nearly 30 minutes passing before either goalkeeper was truly tested. Marcel Sabitzer, still on the hunt for his first goal of the season, had a shot that forced Rui Silva into action.
After scoring in the first leg, Pascal Gross almost found the net again, reaching for a clever pass from Karim Adeyemi that was just out of reach.
Serhou Guirassy attempted to break the deadlock next, as the hosts gradually dominated a rather uneventful first half, but Silva matched his effort, even with a slight deflection off Eduardo Quaresma.
Sporting, however, were struggling to make an impact, failing to register a single shot on target in the opening half as their hopes of European progression waned.

The Sporting goalkeeper kept up a solid performance, making several acrobatic saves early in the second half from efforts by Adeyemi and Daniel Svensson.
However, his day took a turn when he fouled Adeyemi in the box, yet redeeming himself by expertly saving Guirassy’s penalty kick, diving to his right.
Substitute Alexandre Brito had a long-range shot that worried Gregor Kobel just after the hour mark, but it did not signal a resurgence from Sporting.
The hosts ought to have taken the lead ten minutes later when two substitutes combined, with Maximilian Beier setting up Giovanni Reyna, who’s shot unfortunately hit the post, a chance he likely should have converted.
In the 72nd minute, Dortmund thought they had scored when Emre Can nodded in a free-kick from Julian Ryerson, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
That proved to be the final noteworthy moment of the match as Kovac continued his search for a first win at the Westfalenstadion since taking the reins.
