AC Milan appeared to be on their way to a third derby victory of the season when Inter Milan found the net late in the match at the San Siro on Sunday. Although manager Sergio Conceicao expressed his disappointment, he acknowledged that a 1-1 draw was a just result.
This season, Milan had previously triumphed in both encounters, with Conceicao clinching the Italian Super Cup last month in just his second match in charge following a 3-2 win against their rivals. However, they were thwarted in their bid for a hat-trick by Stefan de Vrij’s last-gasp equaliser.
“We displayed the attitude we intended, Inter are well-acquainted with each other and are adept at creating challenges for their opponents. It was crucial to mitigate their strengths while capitalising on their weaknesses,” Conceicao told Sky Sports.
“Ultimately, we’re naturally disappointed for dropping two points, especially given the joy they showed at the conclusion. I believe the draw is justified, yet one must be aware that mistakes come with consequences.
“Looking ahead to our next match, now that the transfer window has closed, I believe we’ll approach it with greater composure and can reset for four strong months ahead,” he added.
Despite the commendable performance against the reigning champions, Conceicao still sees potential for growth and elaborated on his goals for the squad.
“Mentally, we need to cultivate consistency. It’s non-negotiable; if there’s a lack of enthusiasm for the game, something isn’t right,” he commented.
“Tactically and in terms of game dynamics, we’re missing certain elements. We attempted to press higher up the pitch but left gaps in our midfield, which is something I wish to rectify.
“In my view, there’s a link between the defensive phase and the offensive one; when you attack effectively and occupy space well, you’re better positioned to respond when possession is lost.
