Western Force head coach Simon Cron exhibited his frustration by tossing his headset in dismay after witnessing his team squander a prime chance to claim an upset victory against the Fijian Drua in Lautoka on Saturday.
Trailing 24-22 as the clock hit 80 minutes, the Force let slip an attacking lineout, allowing the relieved Drua to boot the ball to touch, dashing the hopes of celebrating Zac Lomax’s Super Rugby debut.
The former NRL star made a notable impact with a 20-minute stint from the bench, igniting a counter-attack that resulted in Will Harris scoring a try and earning a yellow card for opposing winger Ilaisa Droasese.
Lomax also showcased his skills in the air with a superb catch and appeared to be given the freedom to roam around Churchill Park.
However, the team’s kicking woes proved detrimental to their cause.
Veteran substitute Kurtley Beale, who had been responsible for throwing an intercept pass that allowed Isikeli Basiyalo to score, missed the crucial conversion for Harris’ try that could have equalised the match at 24-24.

Adding to their woes, Ben Donaldson was off target with a 45m penalty attempt in the 78th minute that could have swung the result in favour of the Force.
With Lomax being an accomplished goal kicker, his skills might soon be considered by Cron in upcoming matches.
This defeat leaves the Force sitting 10th out of 11 teams, with their chances of reaching the finals virtually dashed.

“It was a really tough and physical game, and we were aware that would be the case,” stated Force captain and try-scorer Jeremy Williams.
“We executed well in our set-piece, and I believe we positioned ourselves to win. If we had nailed a few key moments, we could have clinched it. Although it was an entertaining match for the fans, it’s disappointing not to emerge victorious. I’m genuinely proud of the boys for their preparation this week and the effort they displayed on the field.”
