Western Force coach Simon Cron expressed his frustration by throwing down his headset after witnessing his players squander a prime chance to pull off a surprise victory against the Fijian Drua in Lautoka on Saturday.
With the score at 24-22 in favour of the Drua as the clock struck 80 minutes, the Force fumbled an attacking lineout, allowing the jubilant hosts to kick the ball to touch and dampen the excitement of Zac Lomax’s Super Rugby debut.
The former NRL standout made an impressive 20-minute appearance off the bench, initiating a counter-attack that resulted in Will Harris scoring a try and earning a yellow card for opposing winger Ilaisa Droasese.
Lomax also showcased his skills in the air with a solid high-ball catch, evidently granted the freedom to roam around Churchill Park.
However, the Force’s struggles with goalkicking proved detrimental.
Veteran replacement Kurtley Beale – who had thrown an interception leading to Isikeli Basiyalo’s try – failed to convert Harris’s try, which would have levelled the scores at 24-24.

Moreover, Ben Donaldson’s miss from a 45-metre penalty attempt in the 78th minute could have clinched the win for the Force.
Lomax, known for his capabilities as a goalkicker, might find himself in Cron’s considerations for future matches.
This defeat places the Force at the bottom of the table, as they currently sit 10th out of 11 teams, with their hopes for finals nearly extinguished.

“It was a really tough and physical game; we expected that,” said Force captain and try-scorer Jeremy Williams.
“I believe we performed strongly in our set-piece, which was part of our strategy in both halves, enabling us to create a chance to win. If we had executed a few more key moments better, we could have taken home the win. While it was entertaining for the fans, it’s unfortunate that we didn’t come away with the result. I’m incredibly proud of the boys and the effort we put in this week and during the match.”
