Atletico Madrid preserved their slim chances of clinching the LaLiga title with a commanding 3-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano at home. Despite this win, they find themselves 10 points adrift of league leaders Real Madrid, sitting in third place with just five matches left to play.
While their pursuit of a 12th title seems almost impossible this season, Atleti made a strong start against their city rivals, taking the lead within three minutes. Alexander Sørloth muscled past Florian Lejuene to head in Giuliano Simeone’s precise cross from the right flank.
In reality, the towering Norwegian striker could have easily netted a hat-trick before the 10-minute mark, with one header going over the bar and another near-post effort being thwarted by the intervention of Augusto Batalla.

Rayo Vallecano eventually settled into the match, creating a couple of chances with Isi Palazón notably forcing a decent save from Jan Oblak. Sørloth continued to dominate the visitors’ defence, showing physicality, although he sent another header off target as the 30-minute mark approached.
However, the home side would finish the first half in style, as Conor Gallagher made a clever run into the box and connected with Rodrigo De Paul’s cross, directing a precise header into the bottom corner.
Palazón continued to test Oblak shortly after the interval, directing a header that required a sharp save from the Atletico goalkeeper. While Rayo were being given several opportunities, they squandered these chances, with Andrei Ratiu unable to convert a volley from a good position at the back post.
Ratiu’s miss nearly came back to haunt his side when substitute Antoine Griezmann, set up brilliantly by Julián Alvarez, fired wide with a good opportunity.
However, the situation reversed shortly after, with Alvarez breaking clear in the 77th minute and calmly slotting home to complete the scoring, adding the finishing touch for Diego Simeone’s side.
This defeat is a setback for Iñigo Pérez’s team, now positioned in 11th place, yet they are just three points shy of the final European qualification spot, maintaining their hopes of achieving a second continental appearance.
