Aston Villa further boosted their aspirations for a top-four finish in the Premier League by claiming a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest at Villa Park, which extended their unbeaten streak at home to 17 matches.
This season, there haven’t been many instances where the Nottingham Forest defence could be deemed as dormant, but they were caught off guard at Villa Park within the first 15 minutes.
A swiftly taken free-kick by Villa saw Youri Tielemans deliver a pinpoint ball behind the Forest defence, allowing Morgan Rogers to seize the opportunity and score by slotting the ball between the legs of Matz Sels.
Forest’s defensive disarray continued, and Villa capitalised just two minutes later when Ian Maatsen’s dangerous delivery was deftly turned in at the far post by the unmarked Donyell Malen.
Forest struggled to find their footing in the early moments, but a glimpse of their potential emerged midway through the half, when Anthony Elanga embarked on a thrilling solo run, only to see his effort flash just wide of the post. Callum Hudson-Odoi followed suit with a squandered chance shortly after.
It wasn’t until the second half that Forest began to threaten Villa more seriously.
Neco Williams was the first to create danger for Forest after the break, but when presented with space in the area, he curled his shot wide. Minutes later, Hudson-Odoi found himself in a similar position but failed to convert.
However, Villa’s lead was soon halved when substitute Jota Silva, just on for the second half, saw his deflected shot nestle into the bottom corner.

At that stage, the tide of the match had shifted, and Forest nearly equalised just a few minutes later when Elliot Anderson’s effort curled narrowly wide of the far corner.
Unai Emery responded by making a triple substitution to halt Forest’s momentum, but it was Rogers, one of his key players, who should have restored their two-goal lead. Despite skillfully evading two Forest defenders, he was thwarted by the legs of Sels.
These tactical changes solidified Villa’s defence, yet they still provided Williams a gilt-edged chance, whose effort skimmed across the goal, leaving Emiliano Martinez apprehensive.
In stoppage time, Murillo struck the crossbar, but Forest could not deny Villa their seventh consecutive victory across all competitions. This winning momentum could be vital as they prepare for a crucial Champions League clash against PSG midweek.
