Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, expressed that his players are ignited by “pure fire” as they approach the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting on Wednesday. He has called for a fearless attitude as his team pursues two significant trophies, despite facing injury challenges and recent disappointments.
Arsenal’s ambitions for silverware have been trimmed down to two competitions after losses to Manchester City in the League Cup final and Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Arteta remains optimistic, noting that his team is motivated as they strive for their first Champions League title and a Premier League championship after 22 years, currently leading the table with 70 points from 32 matches.
“What we’re aiming for is difficult, challenging, and often bumpy. It’s meant to be this way. We must face it head-on,” Arteta told reporters on Tuesday.
“We are attempting something in this competition that hasn’t been accomplished in the club’s history. That illustrates the challenge we face. This marks our third consecutive year in the Champions League quarter-finals.
“Should we wish to advance further, we absolutely need to have greater ambition than anyone else. We are on the path and very, very close to achieving it.”
The London outfit enters the fixture with a 1-0 lead, following a 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth, which has allowed second-placed Manchester City to narrow the gap to six points ahead of their Premier League clash on Sunday.
“We have no fear. Pure fire is what I want to see from the players, the fans, and myself,” Arteta stated.
“It’s April, and we have an extraordinary opportunity ahead of us. Let’s seize it. We are committing everything we have to this challenge.”
The Spaniard remained tight-lipped regarding team news, providing no update on midfielder Declan Rice, who was absent from training.
“We need to wait until tomorrow morning to assess how a few of the boys are doing and then make the right call,” Arteta commented.
“I prefer not to discuss Rice’s situation. Perhaps one of Bukayo Saka or Jurrien Timber will return. We’ll have to wait and see,” he added.
