Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta expressed that his players are fuelled by “pure fire” as they prepare for Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting. He encouraged fearlessness as they pursue two major trophies despite facing injury challenges and recent disappointments.
The Gunners’ aspirations for silverware have narrowed to two competitions after setbacks against Manchester City in the League Cup final and a loss to Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Arteta affirmed that his squad remains driven as they aim for their first Champions League title and a Premier League championship after a 22-year wait, currently sitting atop the table with 70 points from 32 matches.
“What we are striving for is no easy feat; it’s challenging and at times bumpy. It’s meant to be like this. You must confront it,” Arteta shared with reporters on Tuesday.
“We are attempting to accomplish something in this competition that has never been done in the club’s history, highlighting the difficulty of the task. This is the first time we’ve reached the Champions League quarter-finals for three consecutive years.
“To progress further, we must possess more ambition than anyone else. We are doing just that, and we are incredibly close.”
The London outfit heads into this match with a 1-0 advantage after suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth, which allowed second-placed Manchester City to narrow the gap to six points ahead of their Premier League clash on Sunday.
“We embrace fearless play. Pure fire—that’s what I expect from the players, the fans, and from myself,” Arteta remarked.
“April is upon us, and we have a remarkable opportunity in front of us. Let’s seize it. We’re pouring everything we have into this.”
The Spanish manager kept team news under wraps, providing no updates on midfielder Declan Rice, who missed training.
“We’ll need to wait until tomorrow morning to assess how a few of the lads are faring and make the right decisions,” Arteta stated.
“I don’t want to comment on Rice’s situation. Perhaps either Bukayo Saka or Jurrien Timber will be back. We’ll have to wait and see.”
