In their 12th consecutive league win over Burnley, Manchester City climbed to the top of the Premier League for the first time since August, with a narrow 1-0 victory also sealing Burnley’s fate for relegation to the Championship.
Some apprehensive Burnley fans feared they might witness a record defeat in the Premier League, a concern that seemed likely to materialise just three minutes into the match when Rayan Cherki’s shot was expertly tipped onto the crossbar by Martin Dúbravka.
The onslaught from City soon paid off, as they opened the scoring merely two minutes later. Jérémy Doku threaded a perfect pass to Erling Haaland, who nonchalantly chipped over Dúbravka into the far corner.
Burnley had a few chances to level the score, with Quilindschy Hartman and Zian Flemming both failing to convert golden opportunities that could have turned the tide.
With the title race expected to be tightly contested, City maintained an aggressive approach in search of goals. Nico O’Reilly, Bernardo Silva, and Cherki all had chances to extend City’s lead, yet each was thwarted by Dúbravka, leading to growing frustration.
As the first half approached its conclusion, City owed some gratitude to Abdukodir Khusanov, whose timely tackle on Flemming ensured that the Dutchman blazed his left-footed shot over the bar instead of finding the back of the net.

Pep Guardiola was visibly frustrated, pushing his players for more intensity, which nearly paid off when Haaland’s shot struck the post just 10 minutes after halftime.
Other than that moment, City struggled to create further opportunities against a resolute Burnley, giving Arsenal fans some faint hope that all was not yet lost in the title race.
However, Savinho nearly dashed those hopes 20 minutes from the end, with a powerful shot that Dúbravka did well to save with his feet.
City continued to search for another goal until the final whistle, and while securing three points was crucial, they will be slightly dissatisfied not to have enhanced their goal difference in what appeared, on paper, to be their easiest game remaining.

This victory propelled City to the Premier League summit, a sharp contrast to Burnley’s plight, as their relegation was confirmed following a dismal season in which they triumphed in only one of their last 25 league matches.
