Only a few days after ending his association with St George-Illawarra, Shane Flanagan is reportedly keen on returning to coaching, with a Super League club now on his radar.
The 60-year-old’s departure followed a disappointing run, having lost the final 11 matches of his stint with the Dragons, a streak that began last season. This week, assistant coach Dean Young has been appointed as interim coach for the remainder of the season.
Flanagan is not likely to be considered a leading candidate for head coaching positions in the NRL anytime soon. Therefore, if he prefers not to step down to an assistant role, the Super League appears to be his most viable option.
According to a report by Love Rugby League, Flanagan has expressed interest in the coaching vacancy at the Catalans Dragons.
Sources indicate that Flanagan has been eyeing this position for a while, suggesting he realised his time at the Dragons was limited well before his departure.

The report further claims that should Flanagan join the Catalans, it would be at a reduced salary due to the club’s significant cuts in expenditure this year.
Current interim coach Ryan Sheridan took over from Joel Tomkins, who stepped in after Steve McNamara’s departure at the end of last season following a nine-year tenure.
Flanagan could also emerge as a strong contender for other coaching vacancies within the Super League, particularly as Hull KR seeks a replacement for Willie Peters, who is leaving for the PNG Chiefs at the end of the year, and the Huddersfield Giants dismissed Luke Robinson earlier this season.
At this stage, it remains uncertain whether Flanagan would consider coaching either of these clubs.
The Catalans have experienced a mixed start to their 2026 season, currently holding down sixth place on the ladder with five victories from eight matches.
