Mpumalanga is poised to welcome its second top-tier football team with Kruger United nearing promotion to the Betway Premiership following a significant 2-1 victory against Cape Town City on Wednesday.
Kruger United now holds a five-point advantage at the summit of the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) after clinching four consecutive wins and achieving seven victories out of their last nine matches (D1 L1).
With just four matches remaining against teams situated in the bottom five, their current form, coupled with that of their opponents, makes it hard to envision them missing out on the automatic promotion spot.
The club is eight points clear of Cape Town City and Milford FC, and nine points ahead of Casric Stars, who have been their key competitors for the top position. The Northern Cape’s Hungry Lions remain their only plausible contenders, trailing by five points.

This remarkable ascent comes just after the club’s inception in 2023, when they acquired the status of Caroline FC from the ABC Motsepe League.
They earned their spot in the second tier for the 2024/25 season by overcoming Highbury FC during the national play-offs.
In their debut outing in the MFC, they achieved a commendable fifth-place finish, narrowly missing out on play-off qualification by a mere three points, a disappointing end marred by reports of delayed or unpaid wages. However, this set the groundwork for their present achievements.
Currently managed by Lesotho-born Abraham Mongoya, in his second tenure at the club, he took over the managerial reins after Vusi Vilakazi departed for Chippa United earlier in the season.
Prior to this role, he had started the season managing Upington City, but left in October. He has also managed TS Sporting during the 2022/23 season.

The squad includes a number of seasoned players, such as former SuperSport United midfielder Morne Nel, ex-Cape Town City and TS Galaxy full-back Ebrahim Seedat, Benin international goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou, former Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu striker Celimpilo Ngema, ex-Bafana Bafana defender Tercious Malepe, and former Bloemfontein Celtic and Moroka Swallows defender Wandisile Letlabika.
The foundation of their season has been their formidable home performance, remaining unbeaten at their home ground with nine wins and four draws in 13 games, boasting the best record in the league.
While their away form (W6 D3 L4) isn’t as impressive, it’s still joint-best in the second tier, alongside Cape Town City, with 21 points accumulated.
They have netted 41 goals, which is the highest in the league, although they’ve conceded 31, the most among the top eight teams and the sixth-highest in the second tier.

Their total goals scored and conceded, standing at 72, is the highest for any team in the competition, epitomising their philosophy of prioritising scoring over defensive tactics.
The club’s final four matches will see them face bottom side Baroka FC on Sunday, host second-last Black Leopards on May 2, travel to Gomora United on May 10, and conclude their season at home against The Bees on May 17.
Home matches are played at the KaNyamazane Stadium, roughly a 30-minute commute from Mbombela, where they could be next season’s provincial rivals of TS Galaxy in the top flight.
