On Monday, Tottenham Hotspur announced that midfielder Xavi Simons will need surgery on his right knee following a rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Simons sustained the injury on Saturday during Tottenham’s narrow 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, being stretchered off in the 63rd minute.
“Xavi is set to undergo surgery in the coming weeks and will subsequently begin his rehabilitation with our medical team,” the club stated.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Simons expressed on Sunday that his season has “come to an abrupt end” due to this significant injury, which will prevent him from playing in the World Cup.
“They say life can be cruel, and today it certainly feels that way,” the 23-year-old shared via an Instagram post.
“My season has come to an unexpected halt, and I’m struggling to come to terms with it. Truly, I’m heartbroken… All I wanted was to fight for my team, and now that opportunity has been taken away from me… as well as the World Cup. Representing my country this summer has just slipped away.”
Simons was anticipated to play a vital role in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad, marking what would have been his second World Cup appearance after debuting in 2022. He has collected 34 caps, with his most recent match being in friendlies last March.
This setback also significantly impacts Tottenham during a challenging Premier League campaign, as the North London club currently sits in 18th place with 34 points, just two points adrift of safety.
