The 139th Stockholm Derby at 3Arena concluded in a stalemate, as Djurgarden and Hammarby battled to a 1-1 draw, with both teams now securing two victories from their first five matches in the Allsvenskan season.
Despite the typically fierce atmosphere, the away team had only managed to clinch victory once in the last 11 encounters. This was concerning for Hammarby, who entered the derby following a disappointing home draw against Halmstad, having failed to build on their impressive 8-1 win over Orgryte.
On the other hand, Djurgarden were keen to bounce back from two consecutive defeats. The enthusiastic crowd made for a lively opening as Blaranderna set the pace, with Bo Hegland combining with Patric Aslund before forcing a straightforward save from Warner Hahn.
Djurgarden maintained their dominance early on and were rewarded with a goal in the ninth minute. Hegland seized possession in the Hammarby half, evaded a challenge, and played the ball to Hampus Findell, who coolly backheeled into the path of Kristian Lien. Lien then slotted it home low past Hahn, marking his third goal of the season.
Initially, Hammarby’s response to going a goal down was underwhelming—striker Paulos Abraham, hampered by an ongoing injury, demonstrated his lack of sharpness with a wayward shot from a promising position.
Djurgarden were content to sit back and hit Hammarby on the counter. They nearly capitalised midway through the first half when an unmarked Aslund cut in from the right, only to be denied by a quick-footed save from Hahn.
However, this moment sparked Hammarby’s best period of the half, as Nahir Besara came close on a couple of attempts from distance. Following some intricate play between Abraham and Montader Madjed, Oscar Johansson’s well-placed shot from 20 yards forced Djurgarden’s Jacob Rinne into action.
The green and whites’ best opportunity arrived in the 32nd minute, when Victor Lind collected a long ball and struck the near post. In the final ten minutes of the half, Abraham remained at the centre of attention, but unfortunately for Hammarby, his actions only stirred frustrations among Djurgarden players and fans alike as he clashed with Matias Siltanen and then collided with Rinne while contesting a cross.
Just as the second half began, the match had to be paused due to Djurgarden fans setting off flares. Once play resumed, Hammarby created the first clear chance, with Madjed laying the ball back for Besara, whose attempt from the edge of the box went through traffic but was comfortably gathered by Rinne.
Following that, both teams struggled for dominance, but as the hour mark approached, Kalle Karlsson’s men began to pose more of a threat. A critical block from Miro Tenho thwarted another opportunity for Abraham inside the box, but Bajen found their equaliser in the 61st minute.
Besara took charge in a central position, combining with Johansson to unlock the Djurgarden defence. He then cleverly nudged the ball past Rinne with the outside of his boot.
In response to the equalising goal, Jani Honkavaara made a couple of substitutions, yet Djurgarden continued to look for Lien, who cut in from the left and had a shot deflected wide. At the other end, Abraham neatly distributed the ball to Madjed on the flank, but the latter’s first-time shot sailed over the bar.
In the closing ten minutes, Besara, riding a wave of confidence, attempted a spectacular 35-yard shot that just skimmed over the crossbar. Moments later, Djurgarden breathed a sigh of relief as an offside flag was raised against Abraham after he pounced on a loose ball in the box.
Under increasing pressure, Djurgarden nearly snatched a victory late in the match, but Adam Stahl misconnected with his header from a cross, sending it wide. In added time, Leon Hien swept a shot past the post during a counterattack.
Ultimately, there was no dramatic late winner, meaning Djurgarden snapped their two-match losing streak, while Hammarby was held to consecutive draws. The 30th draw in their storied rivalry keeps Hammarby three wins ahead of Djurgarden in the overall 08 Derby standings.
