Borussia Dortmund secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) for the 11th consecutive season after a resounding 4-0 victory over Freiburg, marking their sixth straight home win against the visitors in the Bundesliga, each with a margin of at least three goals.
With Freiburg potentially distracted by their upcoming UEFA Europa League (UEL) semi-final, Dortmund seized the initiative early and found the back of the net just eight minutes into the match.
A ball over the top from Ramy Bensebaini was intercepted by Maximilian Beier, who charged in from the left and neatly slotted the ball beneath Noah Atubolu.
Dortmund’s defence thwarted Freiburg’s attempts to respond, and they soon extended their lead when Samuele Inacio surged forward and laid it off to Julian Brandt, who delivered a perfectly weighted cross for Serhou Guirassy to tap in from close range.

This dominant performance against Freiburg has almost become a regular occurrence at this venue, as Dortmund solidified their lead with a corner taken by Julian Ryerson that Bensebaini headed home from close quarters.
However, Freiburg demonstrated resilience in the latter stages of the first half, appearing to threaten with a potential goal after the interval, but Vincenzo Grifo’s cross found Lukas Kubler, who was unfortunately deemed offside as he scored.
Content to defend their lead, Dortmund allowed Freiburg some space to seek a consolation, yet the closest the visitors came was a stray shot from Lucas Holer.
It seemed that Freiburg’s hopes of a stunning comeback faded with about ten minutes remaining, allowing Dortmund the freedom to control the ball and strike again.
Daniel Svensson collected it on the right side of the box and found a crowded area, where fellow substitute Fabio Silva turned and elegantly placed a finish into the bottom-right corner.
Since Jurgen Klopp’s last season in charge, Dortmund has not missed out on qualifying for the UCL, and they have a chance to secure a sixth second-place finish next weekend.
Conversely, while Freiburg’s own ambitions for European competition took a hit with this defeat, they could still find themselves joining Dortmund in the UCL if they succeed in the UEL.
