West Bromwich Albion has been handed a two-point deduction after breaching the Football League’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations, leaving them not mathematically secure from relegation in the Championship.
This penalty has seen the club drop to 20th position, now sitting six points above the relegation zone where Oxford United lies, with just two matches remaining.
An independent compliance report submitted to the Club Financial Review Panel (CFRP) indicated that West Brom’s losses surpassed the Upper Loss Threshold of £39 million ($53 million) during the three-year period concluding in the 2024/25 season.
West Brom has refuted the claims.
“After a hearing conducted on the 22nd and 23rd of April, and following a thorough review of the Compliance Report along with the Club’s responses, the CFRP concluded that the Club’s losses did exceed the Upper Loss Threshold and consequently imposed a two-point deduction, effective immediately,” read the official statement.
The club has a window of 14 days to lodge an appeal upon receiving the detailed written reasons. Should they choose to appeal, the hearing will take place within 28 days of the appeal’s submission.
Despite their previous undefeated nine-match streak which had temporarily elevated them from the relegation zone, a convincing 3-0 victory at home against Watford last week seemed to secure their safety—prior to this deduction.
West Brom will face second-placed Ipswich Town this Saturday, before concluding their season against the bottom-placed Sheffield Wednesday.
