RB Leipzig has stretched their unbeaten streak at home to six matches (4 wins, 2 draws) following a comfortable 3-1 win over Union Berlin at Red Bull Arena, effectively securing a top-four position in the Bundesliga and a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The home team made a strong start, with Antonio Nusa charging into the box and forcing a low save from Frederik Rønnow.
Rønnow was soon called into action again as Rômulo Cardoso found space in the area; his first attempt was well denied, but András Schafer had to react quickly, heading the ball out to safety.
Die Roten Bullen kept up the attack, and their persistence paid off midway through the first half.
Yan Diomande’s delivery from the byline was parried by Rønnow, creating a chance for Leopold Querfeld, whose clearance fell to Max Finkgräfe. The striker seized the moment, striking a powerful left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Things worsened for the visitors just three minutes later, as a long ball found Cardoso, who took advantage of the opportunity by slipping the ball past Rønnow into an empty net.
Will Orban’s header struck the crossbar shortly afterwards, while Christoph Baumgartner was thwarted by an excellent save, leaving Union trailing by two goals at the break.
Even though Union aren’t in immediate danger of relegation, their fans would prefer to see their side secure safety as soon as possible.
However, their chances of achieving this looked slim as Leipzig doubled their lead shortly after the hour mark. A precise pass found Ridle Baku in the box, where he evaded defenders and neatly placed his shot past Rønnow’s desperate dive.

Union managed to score with their first shot on target in the 78th minute, as Danilho Doekhi’s powerful header from a corner found the net, but it was too little too late as Leipzig maintained their grip on the match, particularly after Ilyas Ansah’s late goal was ruled out for offside.
The outcome sees Leipzig increase their lead over nearest rivals TSG Hoffenheim to eight points, with only 12 points left to contest, moving them closer to their seventh top-four finish in the past eight seasons.
Union, on the other hand, find themselves in 11th position, still six points clear of the relegation playoffs, but may face a tense conclusion to the season.
