In his latest book, Stale Solbakken reveals that he nearly considered stepping down from his role as the coach of the Norwegian national team amidst a significant crisis following their failure to qualify for the 2024 European Championships.
The book titled “Oppstandelsen” (“The Rising”) chronicles the journey of the national team during a tumultuous period when they missed out on the European Championships in 2024, leading to a wave of jubilation throughout the country when the men’s team secured a spot in this year’s World Championships.
Author Alfred Fidjestol provides an insider’s perspective on the inner workings of the national team, having attended multiple closed training sessions, maintained a close dialogue with Solbakken, and held discussions with captain Martin Ødegaard among others.
Following Norway’s loss to Spain in October 2023, which ultimately extinguished their hopes of qualifying for the European Championship, Stale Solbakken convened key figures within the national team just hours after the disappointing match.
“I don’t know if I was hated, but I don’t think there’s any team in Norway that’s more emotional than the men’s national football team. We were all quite disheartened,” Solbakken shared with NRK. “It was crucial to provide an update after the game against Spain.”
In the aftermath of the match, he expressed the need to “evaluate everything” following the setback. “I believe it’s essential during such times not just to push on, but to pause and reflect,” he noted.
In the wake of the qualification failure for the European Championships, the national team faced intense scrutiny. Solbakken felt he had let down an entire nation. Fidjestol spoke with several individuals who were present during Solbakken’s debrief.
The book details: “He deemed it necessary to update his support staff. It was an opportune moment to contemplate the future. The opportunity had passed, and there were nine months until the national team would play another significant match,” Fidjestol informed NRK.
“Naturally, he had to assess whether he still had the enthusiasm and conviction that he was the right person for the role. This was a point in time when many had started to lose faith,” crediting Fidjestol’s insights from the book.
In the subsequent year after their defeat to Spain, Norway topped their group in the National League. Six months later, they embarked on World Cup qualification with an impressive run of eight straight victories across eight matches, securing their place at the World Cup.
