Chelsea has announced that from next season, all their Women’s Super League home matches will be held at Stamford Bridge, the club confirmed on Wednesday, following a trend set by several other clubs across England.
The eight-time WSL champions now join the ranks of Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Leicester City, all of whom have transitioned to hosting their women’s home league fixtures at their men’s main stadiums.
Since 2017, Chelsea has played its home games at Kingsmeadow, with only a select few matches, including Champions League encounters, taking place at Stamford Bridge. The club has stated that from next season, Kingsmeadow will be designated for academy fixtures.
Currently, the 4,850-capacity venue is shared between the women’s first team and the under-21 squad, while Stamford Bridge can accommodate around 41,000 spectators.
In an open letter to fans, the Chelsea squad expressed that this transition is both an emotional and significant milestone for the club.
“Departing Kingsmeadow after nine years is a bittersweet experience. It’s where numerous Chelsea legends crafted their legacies,” they remarked.
“However, much like the transition from Wheatsheaf Park, a new era commences, and Stamford Bridge offers the spotlight this team truly deserves.”
The players emphasised that this change will not alter their aspirations.
“This marks a fresh chapter, but our goals remain unchanged. We aim to win. We want to lift more trophies.”
“We are eager to forge further history. That is what Chelsea has always been about – and we intend to uphold that legacy with our supporters standing beside us at the Bridge.”
