Christian Pulisic is convinced that the current United States squad is the strongest he has ever been a part of. The AC Milan forward emphasised that the team’s quality and depth should instil confidence in Americans as they look forward to the 2026 World Cup hosted on home turf.
Pulisic, who has long been the face of American football, remarked that the squad is in a promising position as attention shifts to a tournament set to be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“I’d say that’s a fair assessment,” Pulisic told Reuters when asked if this is the best US team he has been involved with.
“Looking at the players performing at the highest levels and excelling with their clubs, it’s clear that we have a really solid squad with great depth,” he noted.
“We have multiple players capable of filling various positions. This is a very strong team.”
Pulisic, alongside coach Mauricio Pochettino, will spearhead a squad likely to include forwards Folarin Balogun and Tim Weah, midfielders Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, defenders Tim Ream and Chris Richards, and goalkeepers Matt Freese and Matt Turner.
Speaking to Reuters in partnership with deodorant brand Degree, Pulisic expressed that competing in a World Cup on US soil adds an extra layer of motivation to this paramount event.
“A World Cup is inherently motivating, and having it in the US with my family and close friends in attendance makes it an experience like no other,” he stated.
Home Ground Advantage
The 27-year-old expressed hope that American supporters will provide a significant boost when the tournament kicks off. The US will face Paraguay on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
“I know the atmosphere in the stadiums will be electric,” he shared. “We want to absorb that energy, use it as motivation, and strive to make our fellow Americans proud.”
Pulisic, who has been representing the US since he was a teenager, stated that donning the national team jersey continues to hold immense significance for him.
“Wearing the US colours and representing the nation is something I take seriously,” he affirmed.
“I’ve been doing this since I was 17… I take immense pride in being American and am thankful for everything this country has given me. I just want to give back and hopefully make people proud.”
Captain America
As one of the most prominent figures in US football’s history, Pulisic has often been dubbed “Captain America” and positioned as the public face of the men’s game. However, he remarked that he prefers to tune out such labels rather than embrace them.
“I definitely try to ignore that noise,” he admitted. “I focus on what I can contribute and how I can help my team succeed.”
He mentioned that his leadership style has evolved to establish standards through his actions rather than through speeches.
“I aim to demonstrate my commitment to the team through my daily work and training, leading by example,” he conveyed.
Pulisic also expressed that he does not feel the burden of being the face of the sport in the United States, although he aspires to inspire younger players.
“My priority is performing my role,” he stated. “If I can inspire some along the way, that’s fantastic. It drives me, but I don’t feel pressured to do so.”
As expectations rise for the co-hosts, Pulisic was hesitant to define success by a specific outcome, stating that the primary goal is to progress beyond the group stage and tackle the tournament one match at a time.
Nonetheless, his message to fans was unequivocal.
“The team is in a strong position. People should be excited and ready to rally behind us.”
