Lecce failed to capitalise on the opportunity to escape the Serie A relegation zone, managing only a 1-1 draw at home against Fiorentina. This result leaves the Giallorossi with just one victory in their last eight matches.
The first 20 minutes of the match were uneventful, with the only significant moment coming from Walid Cheddira, whose header from a corner was comfortably cleared off the goal line by Nicolo Fagioli.
Despite the lack of clear scoring opportunities, the Salentini demonstrated more urgency in attack than their opponents, as every point was crucial for the hosts at this point in the season.
However, Fiorentina steadily gained momentum as the first half unfolded, and they broke the deadlock in the 30th minute. Jack Harrison received a clever pass from Rolando Mandragora and curled the ball past Wladimiro Falcone from 12 yards out.
Fiorentina nearly increased their lead shortly after when Roberto Piccoli narrowly missed the target from close range, guiding the ball just wide following a brilliant pass into the box from Dodo.
As the half-time whistle blew, Lecce were left to reflect on their ongoing struggle; a lack of attacking prowess that has haunted them all season, epitomised by Oumar Ngom’s weak effort from a promising position just before the break.
The frustrations for Lecce continued into the second half, as they created several promising chances but consistently fell short with their final delivery.
With 20 minutes remaining, David de Gea was finally called into action, expertly tipping the ball around the post to deny Lameck Banda’s attempt to equalise.
It was from the ensuing corner that Lecce finally turned their fortunes around, as Antonino Gallo delivered a pinpoint cross from the right to an unmarked Tiago Gabriel, who made no mistake in finding the net, igniting the home crowd.
In a desperate push for a late winner, the hosts laid siege to their opponents, but time eventually ran out. Substitute Nikola Stulic squandered a golden opportunity, allowing Paolo Vanoli’s side to escape with a hard-earned point.
With only five matches left in Serie A, 18th-placed Lecce are in urgent need of a win and will aim to secure that during their trip to Hellas Verona this Saturday.
Meanwhile, La Viola remain in 15th position, but their six-match unbeaten run in the league has brought them closer to securing their Serie A status for the upcoming season.
