FC Porto capitalised on Sporting’s misstep in their derby encounter against Benfica, strengthening their position at the pinnacle of the Portuguese league by defeating Tondela, with a standout performance from Danish international midfielder Victor Froholdt.
After FC Porto’s Europa League exit following a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, coach Francesco Farioli made seven alterations to his lineup. Rodrigo Mora and Pietuszewski were reinstated to the first team, while Tondela opted for a five-defender setup, introducing Brayan Medina and Tiago Manso after their 2-2 draw with Gil Vicente.

With Froholdt featuring prominently in the starting lineup, the home team initially found it challenging to penetrate a well-organised Tondela defence that held firm during the first half. Porto had a prime opportunity to take the lead when Joe Hodge blocked a shot from Rodrigo Mora with his hand inside the penalty area, but Bernardo Fontes brilliantly saved Alan Varela’s resulting penalty.
Just three minutes into the second half, Porto broke the deadlock when Turkish forward Deniz Gul weaved past three defenders to assist Gabriel Veiga, who simply tapped the ball into an empty net.
This opening goal invigorated Porto’s attack, and they came close to extending their lead when a shot from Froholdt rebounded off the post. Following the concession of the first goal, Tondela struggled to regain their composure and were punished yet again in the 65th minute as Froholdt showcased his impressive form.
After a misstep from Moses Sithole in the build-up, Froholdt seized the opportunity, snatching the ball and delivering a deft left-footed shot that evaded Fontes to double Porto’s advantage.
No further goals were registered in the match, leaving Porto with a commanding seven-point lead over Benfica and an eight-point gap over Sporting, who sit in second and third place, respectively.
