Bayern Munich demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude and unwavering belief by coming from behind three times to defeat Real Madrid 4-3, securing a spot in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday, according to coach Vincent Kompany.
Kompany, who received a yellow card during the match and will be unavailable for the first leg of their last-four clash against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, noted that the Bavarians, on the hunt for a treble of titles, had to summon their resolve to overcome the 15-time European champions with an aggregate score of 6-4 in a thrilling encounter.
“The players showed exceptional mental strength today to bounce back from setbacks,” said Kompany. “Our supporters also made a significant difference. We maintained our composure and always believed that our moment would arrive. The boys truly earned this victory.”
“What stands out for me is the incredible unity we displayed. That’s the takeaway from this match. We exhibited total belief and the determination to fight our way back into contention.”
“Our team possesses a wealth of talent and experience to navigate these challenging scenarios. To concede a goal after just 35 seconds requires a mental reset. But we remained focused on our strategy,” Kompany remarked.
After just 35 seconds, Bayern found themselves trailing 1-0, as Arda Guler capitalised on a glaring error from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, with Real Madrid taking the lead twice more to head into half-time 3-2 ahead.
However, Bayern, who had won the first leg 2-1 in Spain, kept their cool and scored twice in the dying minutes through Luis Diaz and Michael Olise, clinching victory and advancing to the semi-finals.
The six-time European champions stand on the brink of possibly securing the Bundesliga title this weekend, boasting a 12-point lead with five matches left, before competing against Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup semi-finals.
“It was an incredibly emotional match,” said Kompany, now in his second season at Bayern. “We controlled a significant amount of possession and consistently felt we could find the back of the net. However, Real Madrid is always a threat with their pace and skill.”
Kompany has become the 11th coach to guide Bayern to the European Cup semi-finals.
