A last-gasp goal from Janni Thomsen earned Denmark their first victory on Swedish soil in over a decade, as Jakob Michelsen’s squad held on against a fierce Swedish attack in the World Cup qualifying match in Gothenburg, securing a 2-1 triumph.
The Danish women’s team found themselves under significant pressure for much of the game, to say the least. However, with the Swedes failing to capitalise on their opportunities and a stroke of luck on their side, the visitors managed to take all three points on Tuesday night.
Despite creating numerous chances, the Swedish side struggled to find the finishing touch to convert their dominance into goals, a misstep that ultimately proved costly as Denmark capitalised on their sole chance in the second half.
Following an early strike from Monica Jusu Bah that put the home team in front, Pernille Harder equalised after around 30 minutes, before Janni Thomsen netted a dramatic late winner on the break.
This marks the first time in nearly ten years that Denmark has triumphed over Sweden in a qualifying match for a major tournament.
In the previous 2025 cycle, Sweden emerged victorious against Denmark on three occasions. The last time Denmark overcame Sweden was during the European Championships qualifiers in September 2016, defeating a Swedish side that had already secured top spot in their group.
With this victory, Denmark now sits atop their World Cup qualifying group with seven points, while Sweden and Italy both have four points, with Italy having bested Serbia 6-0 on Tuesday.
