A last-minute goal from Janni Thomsen secured Denmark’s first victory on Swedish soil in over a decade, as Jakob Michelsen’s side held off a fierce Swedish second-half onslaught to clinch a 2-1 triumph in the World Cup qualifying match held in Gothenburg.
The Danish women’s team spent the majority of the game on the defensive, to put it mildly. However, a combination of Swedish squandered chances and a sprinkle of luck allowed the visitors to leave with all three points in the World Cup qualifier on Tuesday evening.
Despite generating a wealth of opportunities, the Swedes struggled to translate their dominance into goals, which ultimately proved costly. Denmark made their single second-half opportunity count, capitalising when it mattered most.
After Monica Jusu Bah had given Sweden a bright start with an early goal, Pernille Harder found the equaliser around the half-hour mark. In a dramatic finish, Janni Thomsen sealed an unexpected away win during injury time with a swift counter-attack.
This marks the first occasion in nearly a decade that Denmark has triumphed over Sweden in a qualifying match for a major tournament.
In 2025, the Swedes had triumphed three times against Denmark. The Danes’ last victory over Sweden came during the European Championship qualifiers in September 2016, when they managed to defeat a Swedish side that had already secured top spot in the group.
With this win, Denmark now tops their World Cup qualification group with seven points, while Sweden and Italy, who defeated Serbia 6-0 on Tuesday, sit on four points each.
