Rene Higuita, the legendary former goalkeeper of Colombia’s national team and an idol for Atletico Nacional, has shared his insights regarding the current state of the Colombian national team managed by Néstor Lorenzo. He discussed the criticism directed at James Rodriguez and revealed his predictions for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
On 6 September, the ‘Scorpion’ will celebrate his 31st birthday. Coincidentally, it marks the anniversary of an unforgettable acrobatic save he made against England in 1996, a moment etched in football history. Higuita’s revolutionary influence on the goalkeeper role is well-remembered across the globe.
Here’s his analysis concerning the queries regarding Néstor Lorenzo’s squad and the place of James Rodriguez in the starting line-up.
Colombia National Team: Néstor Lorenzo and the Importance of James Rodríguez
How do you perceive Colombia’s sense of identity and confidence?
“We are feeling quite optimistic about our national team, despite the disappointing performances in the recent games against France and Croatia. While the results weren’t ideal, we recognise the talent and potential within our squad.”
Discuss the matches against France and Croatia. Considering the calibre of these teams, how do you evaluate the outcomes?
“We faced two formidable opponents that tested us significantly. Unfortunately, we didn’t showcase our best abilities. Nonetheless, we maintain faith in our national team and our coach, even when faced with tough results. The scrutiny surrounding Lorenzo has been prominent in Colombia, as it typically is in such situations.”
What is your take on the current position of the Argentinian coach?
“I believe this process unfolds in phases — encompassing matches, qualifications, and ultimately the World Cup itself. We are essentially starting anew, and the experience our national team possesses is invaluable.”
“As former players and supporters, we strive to provide constructive feedback to bolster our national team. Our goal is to avoid controversy and unify as a nation in support of our squad.”
There has been much debate regarding James Rodriguez following the friendlies in March. What’s your view on this?
“Ah, it’s a complex issue! James is an integral part of our national team, and his contributions are undeniable. Many question his inclusion due to limited minutes at Minnesota United.”
“On the other hand, there’s criticism aimed at Diaz for receiving ample playing time. It’s somewhat contradictory, isn’t it? It’s crucial to be respectful in these dialogues. We must wait and understand the rationale behind selections. Ultimately, the aim is to assemble a team that can secure victories.”
What about Luis Diaz? He seems to be thriving in Europe. He even netted a goal against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu recently. In terms of leadership, how do you view Luis’s current status and who stands out as a leader within this national team?
“This national team boasts multiple leaders, each with significant experience in their respective positions. It’s crucial we place our trust in our captain, Lorenzo, who guides our collective efforts.”
“Taking into account Luis Díaz’s outstanding form, we should make the most of his ability to change games. This presents a challenging situation for our coach.”
Considering your extensive goalkeeping experience, how do you evaluate Colombia’s current goalkeeping situation?
“Colombia is fortunate to have numerous talented goalkeepers. We have (Alvaro) Montero, David Ospina, Camilo Vargas, (Kevin) Mier, and (Luis) Marquinez, among others, who are all capable of stepping up for our national team. We can confidently rest easy knowing the strength of our goalkeeping options.”
The World Cup: Potential Contenders and New Regulations in Football
Moving on to the World Cup, which teams do you consider as frontrunners?
“There are several strong candidates. Observing the Champions League reveals the depth of talent across nations. Argentina, the reigning champions from Qatar 2022, cannot be overlooked, nor can France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, and potentially a surprise from Uruguay.”
“I hold considerable faith in the Colombian national team.”
If you had to make a prediction for the champions, who would you choose?
“Naturally, I’ll always cheer for Colombia. I can’t bet against them. However, if I had to name a potential runner-up, I’d go with France.”
Which goalkeepers currently stand out to you in football?
“I admire Neuer—his performances recently against Real Madrid were remarkable. Courtois is also an exceptional keeper. But for me, the standout at the moment is definitely ‘Dibu’ Martinez.”
Is there a goalkeeper today that you see reflections of yourself in?
“A goalkeeper is fundamentally a pillar and a vital support for the entire team. As the game has developed with various rules and regulations, the goalkeeper’s role has evolved. They often play a more active role in the game; if conditions allow, they need to be involved in starting moves. It’s critical to assess if they possess the necessary skills to take that risk within the game’s flow.
“The objective for any goalie remains to maintain a clean sheet. In the past, teams often used five defenders, transitioning to a line of four alongside a sweeper. These days, formations vary widely depending on a team’s strategy, but the core focus is always on clean defensive play.”
Football is continually evolving, with new rules such as hydration breaks and a five-second restart. How do you feel about these changes?
“Changes that benefit the game are always welcome. It’s essential for referees to have character and authority on the pitch. Sometimes, crowd reactions can disrupt the flow of play, which is why a resolute ref is crucial. When they maintain their stance, it encourages players to adhere to match regulations, ultimately enhancing the game’s pace.”
