Liam Rosenior has acknowledged that Chelsea finds itself in a “challenging position” following a lacklustre 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday, intensifying the scrutiny on the Blues’ head coach.
Rosenior’s team conceded three goals in the second half at Stamford Bridge, with Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, and Jeremy Doku scoring for the title-contending City.
Currently, Chelsea sits in sixth place in the Premier League, trailing fifth-placed Liverpool by four points in the push for a top-five finish.
With their Champions League qualification hopes hanging by a thread, Rosenior faces pointed inquiries regarding Chelsea’s decline since his arrival from Strasbourg as a replacement for Enzo Maresca in January.
The Blues have suffered five defeats in their last six matches across all competitions, including three consecutive losses in the Premier League.
In those three league defeats, Chelsea has yet to find the back of the net, leading Rosenior to express that the team has not met the standards he expects.
“The second half wasn’t good enough. This has been a recurring theme for the past month in how we react to setbacks,” he stated.
“When you go down against teams of this calibre, it’s crucial to stay in the game for the next five minutes. It ended up being an incredibly tough second half.”
Chelsea faced jeers from the crowd as they left the pitch, and Rosenior understands that further criticism may be forthcoming from frustrated supporters unless performances improve in the season’s concluding weeks.
“I take responsibility. This is a collective effort. It’s a situation we must enhance. Improvement starts with our habits and values. I can’t fault the effort, but there was a noticeable lack of confidence in the second half,” he remarked.
“We have to do better. We’re in a tough spot at the moment, and we face another massive match next week.”
“We must remember we were up against a team in exceptional form vying for the title. However, we need to secure victories in games like this. That’s the reason I joined the club.”
Midfielder Enzo Fernandez missed his second consecutive outing after Rosenior’s contentious choice to suspend him.
Fernandez’s suggestion of a potential summer exit had angered Rosenior.
Nevertheless, he will return to play next week after discussions with the rest of the squad.
“Any team would miss Enzo. Together with the leadership group and the sporting directors, we made a long-term decision for the club,” said Rosenior.
“Enzo expressed a desire to converse with the key players. He has spoken with me, the leadership group, and all the players.”
“There are no hard feelings toward Enzo. He will rejoin the squad on Tuesday. He’s a top-tier player and a great individual.”
